Health Alert from Honorary Dog-tor for the Day Abby

Dog-tor for the Day Abby Lab and friends here - Mom still feels poopy with her sneezes and constant sniffles so I'm doing tonight's post again.  I think she is feeling slightly better, she did put a meatloaf in the crockpot with diced sweet potatoes and drizzled some Iron Chef Orange Sauce on it (she will be lazy on cooking when she is sick).  AND she sent a note to Dad that said

"Pick up some white wine please on the way home.

(Signed)
THE NOSE"

Tonight's post is more serious, a health alert for pets put out by the FDA.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning vets and pet paw-rents against the toxicity of a topical (applied to the skin) human skin cancer cream that has sent FIVE dogs to the Bridge WAY too early after they ate some of the product.

The product is Fluorouracil Cream USP 5% which is marketed for our humans as Carac, Effudex, or Floroplex and is very dangerous to pets, most especially dogs.  One dog punctured the tube before her owner could get it away and began the barfing and seizures within two hours.  12 hours later he left for the Bridge as have four other dogs that the FDA knows of.

So for the safety of our furry friends, please immediately put all pet AND human medications, including creams away, in a safe place as soon as you use them. If you ever use any of the creams above, discard any tissues or machine wash immediately any fabric that this cream may have touched and consult your doctor about covering the area with a fabric or band-aid dressing to prevent pet licks that could be very bad for your pet.

Thank you, and I now return you to our regular programming.

    1. Dad was over it in four days but he's 25 years younger than Mom (sorry, mom but you were born when the dinosaurs were roaming the earth even if you still get carded once in a while by the hopelessly near-sighted). Hopefully she'll be on the mend soon. - Abby Lab

  2. We hope your mom is feeling better, BUT, she does more to cook dinner when she's sick than what goes on here.

We think Harvey is giving us a bad name!

    1. The Iron chef sauce on the meatloaf and sweet potatoes was paw-some. With the sugar it sort of burnt and caramelized on the potato parts that were touching the sides of the crock pot. Mom has no appetite (breakfast and lunch was an eggo waffle and a bit of green smoothie) but she ate a small plate so she could have a small glass of wine. - Abby Lab

    1. Yes, just wanted to spread the word. If it saves one pet it's worth the time.

    1. Mom said this is the worse cold she's had in 5 years, but it's just her nose, not lungs, and what's coming out is clear, so no infection. However she did tell the grandpeeps who watch this particular show that if she added green food coloring to what is being expelled out of her nose she could "slime" someone on Nickelodeon. The white wine did help, she had a glass, took a long bath, and is going to bed in a few minutes. - Abby Lab

  5. Tough time of the year to conquer a cold. Tell Mom to be sure to take good care of herself.

We sure hope Harvey found his home AND is well-paid:)

    Great PSA too.

    1. Harvey was found in the UK as a street stray by a professional dog trainer. He's retired now, but had a great career doing a few spots on the telly and charity things. He was one lucky dog.

  7. I hope your mother feels better soon.
I will have to tell my mom about this. She has a cancer spot on her lip they can't remove because of where it is at. Or so they say. I think it has to do more with the cost and reconstruction due to her insurance.

  8. wow that cream is dangerous... my dad had it to use two years ago... but he fortunately was careful with such meds and they came not even near a dog...
Hugs to your mom we hope some wine can chase the cold gremlin away and she feels better soon.
