A Little POTP for Abby Lab

Abby was mad because her Dad went to Europe on business and then her Mom left to run a quick errand two blocks away.  I was gone less than 10 minutes but when I got back she'd snooted a cabinet door open that had been left partially ajar and chewed through a plastic bag to get a packet of raisin biscuits that were way in the back of the cabinet.  This also, a cupboard that has two shelves that slide out, the cookies being clear in the back and only about 8 inches of clearance between the shelves. I've got Houdini dog!

She ate a whole package, including much of the paper.

I rushed her to the emergency vet (not our regular vet who is closed on Sunday but one 15 minutes away, something I researched when we first moved here) and they induced vomiting within 30 minutes of her eating the biscuits.  But raisins can cause sudden renal failure, even if the dog vomits promptly.

The Dogtor looked at the vomit and said "she ate the wrapper too?", seemingly not surprised.

Yup.

The first 48 hours are critical.  So they are keeping her on an aggressive IV treatment to flush any toxins out of her body and promote healthy kidney function.  Plus they are keeping a very close eye on her the next 24 hours (they have overnight vets on staff as they are open 24 hours.)

So any prayers for us are appreciated.  She is the sweetest little dog and a great joy in our house after losing Barkley.
UPDATE:  6 PM central time Sunday.  The Vet just called and said her last bloodwork showed no elevations indicating renal issues as yet and she's resting without discomfort (though she doesn't like the IV much).  I took over some of her grain free food after she was admitted and they will feed her a little. Abby's "fella" Frankie Furter (on a brief blog break) and his family has been in contact and sending lots of loves and prayers.
UPDATE #2:  Abby had a "comfortable" night according to the Vet.  They are doing a second round of blood work to make sure there are no underlying renal issues.  I'm hoping she can come home tonight.
Final UPDATE:  Abby is home after I got off work and tail is wagging.  I've got her dog walker helping take her to the Vet tomorrow for one last blood screen (thank you Lou!) and that will be all that's required for follow up.

  13. We're sending our POTP to Abby! It's unfair that something that smells as yummy as raisin bread is so bad for dogs ❤️🐾🐾❤️

  15. Just saw this. Hopefully Abby Lab is out of the woods by now. She was certainly a determined girl, and may that determination and good vet care help her get back to good as new. Love and prayers.

  22. Hi, I will continue to pray that Abby has no signs of renal failure and will be home soon. It is so scary that our beloved pups can get into food that could cause death. She certainly looks like a wonderful love.

  25. Abby, I hope this means that you're well on the road to recovery. We had to evacuate because of hurricane Irma so we are in Michigan right now. I will try and check for updates on my telephone and it'll be a relief to hear that you are okay. Sending hugs.

  26. Abby, oh Abby ... only us Labbies understand the temptations of those wonders hidden in the cupboards, right? But seriously girlfriend, next time, please be careful ... don't give in to "da nose", it just isn't worth it. You know, I know ... we're smarter than that, after all, we are LABS!
Hang in there, get better, get best! Be fast and furious like you're s'posed to be.
Hugs and woofies ... your friend, Dougie Dog
