Working Wednesday - Alien Invasion

Officer Abby here - like Sarge, reporting with what's happening in Blogville for we "working dogs".

Having just graduated from the Paw-lice academy (that's me on the upper right) I was ready for a special assignment.  But the phone lay silent.

However, this Fastnacht (German doughnut Mom made out of mashed potatoes, lard,, flour and cardamon) looked suspicious and I took it in for questioning while I made my rounds (but it's SQUARE?) of the community.
My walkies- talky just went off.  What's that?  Something suspicious over at Old Mrs. Johnson's place.

SIRENNNNNNN

Hey that's MY house. . oh uh - better not tell anyone I said Mom was old (even though her prom theme was "fire"),  There's something sinister in the air - it's so very quiet and still in the area - not even the squirrels are out.

What's this?

This wasn't here when Mom left for work a few days ago, and those gutters were clean of all dirt and gunk earlier this year

It's ALIVE!
But it's not just our house. . .it's ALL the houses.  The whole Village is infested.

Maybe it was spores from Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

And they've taken a captive of one of the locals!
Look - the alien airship getting away.
No, - Mom says that's an MD80.  We just usually don't see airplanes here unless there's a storm near the airport.  Scrap that line of investigation.

What possibly could it be.  What could have gotten in to ALL the gutters here near Maple Street.

Oh wait. . . I might be going out on a limb here but. . .

Maple Helicopters - if there are tons on the ground there are tons in the gutter and with two weeks of warmth and constant rain . they sprouted!  Sarge will be so happy I cracked the case!
It's just Maple Sprouts infecting the neighborhood - not an invasion from Space.

My work here is done.

  4. Pennsylvania Fastnachts

    1 cup sugar
1 cup mashed potato (don't add butter or milk, just the potato)
    1/4 cup butter
    1/4 cup lard
    3 eggs
    1 1/2 tsp salt
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1/4 tsp nutmeg
    a pinch of Cardamom
    2 packs yeast
1/2 cup warm water (use the warm potato water) plus 1/2 cup milk
    5 cups flour

Cook 2-3 peeled chunked potatoes in water until soft. Set aside potato water. Lightly mash potato and measure out 1 cup, reserving any leftover for another use.

Heat milk until scalded (just bubbling around the edges) and add cooled potato water (you want the mixture warm but not hot).

Add yeast to the warm liquid and stir until dissolved.

Cream the sugar, butter and lard, and then beat that into the mashed potatoes on low, adding in eggs, salt, vanilla and nutmeg. Beat in yeast mixture on medium until smooth and then, with a wooden spoon, beat in roughly 3 cups of the flour Dump out onto a floured surface and knead in as much of the remaining flour as it takes (or not) so the dough is not sticky. Put in lightly greased bowl, cover with cloth and let rise until doubled. Once doubled, roll out dough 1/2 inch thick, cut into squares and lay out on waxed paper about 2 inches apart and cover with a thin, clean towel. Let raise in a warm place until doubled in size (about an hour)

Heat additional lard (you want it about 4 inches deep) to 365 degrees F. and gently add the Fastnachts to the hot fat with a wire spoon, so they do not spatter. Fry until golden brown on both side, turning once. Drain on paper towel and brush with a glaze made of 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 Tbsp of milk and a small splash of vanilla. When cool enough to handle, sprinkle with additional powdered sugar and serve.

  8. We had the exact same problem this year: lots of silver maple helicopters growing everywhere! We installed leaf guards on the gutters and it helped a lot. But whatever places we didn't have them, were growing mini bonsai gardens.

Good luck with your crime fighting, and donut eating too!
